
ANPR / LPR Camera
ANPR, also called LPR, is a camera and a processing pipeline tuned to do one thing exceptionally well: read a vehicle number plate under conditions where an ordinary CCTV camera produces a white smear.
The difference is in the optics and the exposure. Plates are retroreflective, so a plate lit by headlights or an infrared illuminator returns far more light than the surrounding car. An ANPR camera exposes for the plate and lets the vehicle go dark. The result is a legible plate at night, in rain, and at speed, from a camera whose general-purpose image looks unusably dark.
Once the plate is read, it becomes data. Whitelisted vehicles trigger the barrier and drive through. Unrecognised vehicles are logged with a timestamp and an image. Entry and exit are paired into a duration, which is what a carpark billing system needs.

The camera wants to look at the plate as close to straight-on as the site allows. Every degree of horizontal or vertical angle stretches the characters, and past roughly thirty degrees the recognition rate falls off a cliff. This is why the mounting position is surveyed before the camera is quoted. A superb camera in the wrong position reads worse than a modest camera in the right one.
Speed and the read zone
The camera needs the plate in frame, in focus and correctly exposed for long enough to capture a clean frame. At a barrier where vehicles are already slowing, that is trivial. At an open gantry where vehicles pass at thirty kilometres per hour, the read zone has to be lengthened and the shutter shortened, which in turn demands more illumination. Tell us the approach speed and we will design backwards from it.
What ANPR does not do
It reads plates. It does not identify drivers, and it will not give you a usable image of the cabin, because the exposure that makes the plate legible makes everything else black. Sites that want both need two cameras, and we will specify the second one rather than pretend one camera does both jobs.

Can it open a barrier automatically?
Yes. Whitelisted plates trigger the barrier directly. We integrate with the barrier gate during installation.
Does it work at night and in the rain?
Yes. That is precisely what separates an ANPR camera from a general-purpose CCTV camera.
Can it work with my existing CCTV system?
In most cases yes, alongside an existing Hikvision or Dahua installation. Message us with your setup.
